Design and intricate mesh details
This 50mm steampunk mechanical owl is designed specifically for MSLA resin printers. The triangulated mesh captures individual feather plates and exposed chest gears without artifacting. It sits perched on a vintage clockwork gear base. Perfect for tabletop artificer familiars.
FDM printers struggle with this level of detail. Attempting this on FDM at a 0.2 mm layer height with 15% infill requires messy bridging that ruins the intricate gears. Stick to resin for crisp, professional results.
Technical specifications and mesh repair
Generated via Hunyuan3D 2.1, this model undergoes strict automated mesh repair. The resulting STL binary is fully manifold, watertight, and free of self-intersecting geometry. Vertex counts range between 10K–500K triangles to balance high detail with a manageable 65.5 MB file size.
To conserve material, apply hollowing with a 1.5–2.0 mm wall thickness. Ensure you add at least one 2.5 mm drainage hole at the lowest point under the gear base. This prevents trapped resin from cracking the cured print over time.
Build plate orientation and supports
How should you slice this complex avian geometry? Optimal orientation requires tilting the owl 30–45 degrees backward on the build plate. This ensures auto-generated supports attach to the back, preserving the delicate chest cavity details.
Heavy supports are necessary for any overhang greater than 45 degrees, particularly under the articulated wings and beak. Slice at a 0.05 mm layer height using Chitubox (CTB) or Phrozen (PM3M) slicers. Wash thoroughly before curing.
